Traditional Merkel Over & Under Model Designations
Traditionally, model numbers were not marked on the guns. The "E" suffix means the gun has Ejectors.
The second digit of the model number refers to the barrel configuration: 0 means shotgun over shotgun; 1 means shotgun over rifle; 2 means rifle over rifle.
While many details may differ---triggers, engraving, triggerguards, barrel lengths, ribs, cheekpieces, etc, the following are the defining differences:

Model 200-E Blitz action. Double Kersten locks. Underlugs but no bites. Light scroll engraved.

Model 201-E Blitz action. Double Kersten locks. Underlugs but no bites. Game scene engraved.

Model 301-E Anson & Deeley action. Double Kersten locks. Double underbites. Finely engraved.

Model 203-E Sidelock action, usually hand-detachable with visible release lever. Double Kersten locks. Underlugs but no bites. Angled forend iron.

Model 303-E Sidelock action, usually hand-detachable with concealed release lever. Double Kersten locks and double underbites. Rounded forend iron.

Model 303-E Luxus Sidelock action, usually hand-detachable with concealed release lever. Double Kersten locks and double underbites. Rounded forend iron. Various levels of extra finish including deep-chisel engraving, gold or silver inlays and/or stock carving.
