make a better seal, and front sight mounting block 2″ back from muzzle, |
engraved: Metford’s Patent, 708. George Gibbs, 29, Corn Street, Bristol. |
Birmingham proofs on left rear. Fully figured Circassian walnut stock with |
horn-forend-tipped key-fastened splinter forend, classic point-pattern |
checkering with mullered borders, flat sidepanels fore and aft the action, |
horn-capped pistol grip, vacant silver initial oval, and smooth casehardened |
steel buttplate. Beautifully polished and filed casehardened action, with |
rear-mounted pivoting-lever safety on right, stamped: Farquharson’s Patent |
/ 93 on right and engraved: George Gibbs / Bristol on left. Long-range |
vernier target sight mounting to rear tang. Pull: 14-1/8″. Weight: 9lbs, 13oz. |
Built ca 1877. Excellent condition, retaining 90% original lustrous barrel blue, |
95% casehardening color on action and 80% casehardening on buttplate. |
Excellent bore; bright and shiny; nearly perfect. Action is crisp. Safety |
works. Possibly the finest Gibbs long range rifle in existence. With black |
leather sight case embossed in gold: Metford Rifle Sights / G. Gibbs, Bristol, |
containing the vernier staff stamped: George Gibbs Bristol and 92 with inset |
platinum side engraved in degrees of elevation, for sighting radius of 38.7″, |
the correct radius for this rifle, a 1.2″ diameter eye cup, a screw adjustable |
front sight with platinum vernier, taking one of eight interchangeable front |
sight apertures. In original, unlined, compartmented, oak case with |
reinforcing brass straps at corners and pre-1880 paper “George Gibbs” label |
inside lid. |
