Ball

Left to right:

    1. An 8-bore ball having been fired from a double rifle, retrieved from a dead bison, showing grooves impressed on its periphery by the barrel's rifling.

    2. An unfired 8-bore ball.

    3. An 8-bore cartridge, loaded with ball.

    4. An 8-bore bullet.

 

Ball - A spherical projectile, normally of lead, as discharged from a firearm (whether rifled or smoothbore)---as opposed to a cylindroid bullet.

 

Today, inaccurately, "Ball" is used to describe [mostly military] ammunition, loaded with full metal jacket bullets, such as the copper-jacketed .45 ACP cartridges below.
